Elisabetta Tola has a PhD in Microbiology and an MA in Science Communication at SISSA, Trieste, Italy. She is a lecturer in science communication, multimedia, radio production and in data journalism in various journalism schools and courses.

 She is co-founder of the science communication agency formicablu, in Bologna and Roma, where she coordinates projects exploring cross-media tools in science communication. She has been one of the presenters of the daily science programme Radio3Scienza on RAI Radio 3 since 2005. Elisabetta is currently involved in the production of the weekly science programme PiGreco Party, on air and in podcast since 2004 on Radio Città del Capo, Bologna. 

In 2010, she worked on seismic risk prevention, producing the docu-fiction Non chiamarmi terremoto. Her recent interest include data journalism and communication of agro-biodiversity.

Very often, in the last few years, science writers are relying onto research institutes press offices and other intermediate entities to actually deal with the scientific community.

Do you think that direct contact with scientific community is feasible or that science communication groups, networks and associations might actually play an important role as intermediate players and as important communication channels?

I never experienced any difficulty while editing popular science, instead this seems the case with educational publishing and research in science education.
Just a while ago I was told by a friend of mine – an educational researcher himself and a precious source! – that, as an employee of a publishing company, I probably wouldn't be welcome into his environment. I guess this is due to some kind of uneasiness in sharing ideas and projects between a public institute and a private enterprise (but are our goals so incompatible, after all? I don't think so).

I don't know of a network that includes both publishers and educational researchers yet. Please let me know about one emoticon

Hallo everybody, we'll move the discussion to day2, but before we do that, is anybody giving some indications to Martha as with regard to her question? Actually, publishers do seem to be usually not included in usual science&society networks. or maybe I am wrong?
